Course Objectives

The Ohio Tech Prep Academy is divided into two parts: Unit I, All About Tech Prep and Unit 2, 21st Century Teaching & Learning. We encourage teachers to take both units but teachers can choose one.

With the on-line course format and teacher support, the Academy offers the opportunity to reflect, assess, and improve skills relating to managing and teaching within a high quality Tech Prep program.

Unit I: All About Ohio Tech Prep

  • Perkins IV: new vision for Tech Prep in Ohio
    Learn about the goals and requirement of Ohio’s 5 Year Perkins IV Plan and how the elements of this course will help the teacher in their many roles.
     

  • Evolution of Tech Prep
    Understand why Tech Prep was created at the federal level. Gain an understanding of the origin and evolution of Tech Prep in Ohio
     

  • Ohio organization and consortium services
    Gain an understanding of how Ohio provides support to schools through local Tech Prep consortia and what services consortia provide.
     

  • Tech Prep Accountability and Student Data Collection
    Learn about Tech Prep performance measures and the teacher’s role in addressing these performance measures
     

  • Ohio Tech Prep website.
    Navigate the Ohio Tech Prep Website to gain information and resources.
     

Curriculum Development

  • Career Fields Technical Content Standards (CFTCS)
    Identity, interpret and use CFTCS documents that relate to creating Courses of Study
     

  • Programs of Study (POS)
    By 2013 a Program of Study (POS) all CTE programs will be required. Teachers will learn how to construct a POS.
     

  • Articulation Agreements
    Understand the teacher role of creating articulation agreements and gain the skills to participate in these activities
     

Tech Prep Program Management

  • Marketing and Recruitment
    Learn strategies to effectively market programs and create a pipeline for recruitment.
     

  • Business Community Partnerships
    Learn winning strategies to increase business partnerships to enhance student opportunities.
     

  • Student Transitions and Support Services
    Learn how to assist students with the transition from high school to college and develop plans to prepare students to enter college remediation free.
     

  • Student Activities/Clubs and Competitions
    Gain an understanding of the variety of student organizations and competitions that can be used to produce authentic assessments.


Unit 2: 21st Century Teaching & Learning
 

  • Identifying Student Learning Styles
    Understand personal learning styles and its impact on instructional delivery
     

  • Inquiry-based Instruction (IBL)
    Define IBL and explain the differences between Project Based and Inquiry Based Learning along with its essential elements.
     

  • Differentiated Instruction
    Understand how to structure instruction for different ability and learning styles.
     

  • Integrated Academics
    Learn how to collaborate with academic teachers as well as reinforce academic standards in their classroom
     

  • Working with Special Needs Students
    Learn the latest information and state regulations regarding program acceptance and accommodations
     

  • 21st Century Skills
    Learn the 21st Century and Technology Standards that must become part of a teacher’s program and course
     

  • Assessments to Measure Student Skill and Knowledge
    Identify the pre and post assessments used to determine the level of competencies students achieve as well as diverse strategies to achieve this goal
